Dear Neighbor,

My door is always open to you and your family. It is an honor to advocate and fight for you in Congress. As the eldest of 14 brothers and sisters, I have been taking care of people all my life. This is why creating the Neighborhood Service Centers to help our families get through everyday challenges is as important as passing legislation that works for all of us. Below you will find some success stories about our team’s work.

You can also find updates on our fight for clean water, the out of control auto insurance costs, and meetings with local leaders on truck traffic and keeping our neighborhoods safe, and with our critical care workers to address quality care in long-term care facilities.

It is always a pleasure to be in community with all of you, and hear from you directly about how I can advocate on your behalf in the People’s House to enact real change.
Yours in Service,Image   Rashida Tlaib

Wins for Our Residents
Our Neighborhood Service Centers were able to help our families achieve some big wins recently. One of our Redford residents reached out for assistance obtaining his tax return refund after his wife who has Parkinson’s fell behind on medical bills. After filing in March he finally received his return in the amount of $10,111.55.We helped a Detroit resident finally receive her 2023 income tax return of $8,312.70. Another one of our residents in Garden City was granted $2,888 in SSDI benefits. DTE cut off the power for one of our Detroit seniors who uses an oxygen machine. We got on the phone and found out there was a mix up in payments. We were able to restore her power within hours.  A resident in Livonia had their student loan cancelled and was owed a refund. He patiently waited months. When he finally called our Service Center, we were about to get his full refund of $4,076.24 immediately.  A Dearborn resident living with multiple sclerosis was denied insurance claiming she did not have a disability (yeah unbelievable!). I personally reached out to the state’s health and human services agency. They overturned the denial of coverage within 24 hours and her insurance is now active. These are just some of the ways we have helped our families. We have the best team because they care deeply about our families too. Our office is always here to help, so please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you are in need of any assistance.ImageCongresswoman Tlaib at a Constituent Services Fair with Residents.

Fighting for Clean Water
As the founder of the Get the Lead Out Caucus, I know how important it is to prioritize the health and safety of our communities by addressing the urgent issue of lead contamination. I am committed to securing funds and pushing for stronger regulations to ensure every home and school in our district is free from dangerous toxins. Together, we can protect our children and families from the devastating effects of lead exposure and create a healthier future for all. Image Congresswoman Tlaib Testifying at the Rules Committee on Lead Removal.

Auto Insurance Expense Relief Act: Accessing Benefits You Need
Corporate greed and discriminatory practices within the auto insurance industry are trapping our families in a cycle of poverty. Detroiters in our district are paying the highest auto insurance rates in the nation, with an 85% increase in the last year alone, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet. That’s why I introduced The Auto Insurance Expense Relief Act, to ensure that the cost of car insurance is considered when applying for federal assistance programs like food assistance, health care, and housing support.

Securing Funding for Water Infrastructure
I am proud to have secured nearly $50M in additional funding for Environmental Infrastructure in the Water Resources Development Act which passed the House this week. This funding will support flood mitigation and provide critical upgrades to our water infrastructure in Southeast Michigan. I know that this investment will be essential for our communities who have been severely impacted by the record flooding in Michigan. Investing in our water infrastructure is how we ensure climate resilience.

Truck Traffic Mitigation in Northwest Detroit
I was pleased to have met and toured with officials from the City of Detroit, regarding the Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal and Gateway Center at I-96 and M-39. As rail and truck traffic are projected to increase around this facility, we have to be proactive in protecting our community’s public health and safety. This visit follows a town hall held by our office with the City of Detroit earlier this spring to ensure our community has clean air and transparency at all levels of government regarding this new development. I look forward to our continued partnership to keep residents engaged and safe.

Happy 200th Birthday Franklin!
I had a wonderful time celebrating the Village of Franklin’s 200th birthday! It was great to join the Franklin Library, Franklin Historical Society, and FCA for a community picnic at the Village Green. We enjoyed games, fellowship, and fantastic company as we honored two centuries of history and community spirit.ImageImageCongresswoman Tlaib at the Village of Franklin’s 200th Birthday Party.

SEIU Healthcare
Thank you to our health care workers! SEIU Healthcare Michigan is working hard to help ensure that our workers are protected in the workplace and our most vulnerable seniors receive quality care. We discussed the new CMS rule for nursing home staffing standards and the impact on nursing home workers and residents in our district. I will always support our dedicated health care workers and prioritize the care and safety of our seniors.

Livonia Public Schools Superintendent Andrea Oquist
I learned that our Livonia Public Schools are spending $10 million a year to ensure that our students with special needs are accessing the quality education they deserve. I met with Superintendent Andrea Oquist of Livonia Public Schools to strengthen our educational partnerships and discuss the needs of our educators and students in the Livonia community, especially on the importance of the federal government fully funding the Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA) Act. I’m committed to ensuring our schools and families have the resources and support they need to thrive.

Press Releases, Statements, and In the News

Auto Insurance Discrimination
A new auto insurance report confirms what our residents have been telling us. Insurers are still finding ways to get around reforms intended to prevent discrimination. Our families are still caught in the cycle of poverty because of discriminatory practices and greed within the auto insurance industry. Ban credit scores and they use “insurance scores” from the same companies. Ban zip codes and they come up with even more precise location discrimination. The auto insurance industry has shown it is committed to using non-driving factors to squeeze more and more money out of Black Michiganders.

I’ve previously introduced legislation that would prohibit credit reporting agencies from furnishing any consumer data to auto insurers–which would include insurance scores–and my Justice For All Civil Rights Act would prevent the kinds of disparate impact discrimination this report details. One of the strongest tools we have for reigning in the unchecked greed of corporate America is empowering our residents and their advocates to fight back in the courts to uphold our civil rights.
